High School Classmates Plan Community STEM Center
Baton Rouge, LA
A group of Scotlandville High School alumni have set out to give students in the Scotlandville community a tool for advancing their education with a new STEM Resource Center. The project is being spearheaded by classmates from the schools Class of 1972 in recognition of their 50th anniversary. Plans call for creating a facility that will connect the historic community’s elementary, middle and high schools to STEM resources needed to enhance academic performance. Education and training in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math or STEM are projected to dominate future economies and create a growing number of well-paying jobs.
The group plans to coordinate a yearlong series of fundraising activities and events in order to raise money for the center. Working in partnership with the Scotlandville High Alumni Association the group launched the first phase of its campaign with a GoFundMe on February 5th https://www.gofundme.com/f/stem-resource-center . Plans are also to solicit contributions from business and corporate donors, as well as seek grant funds and local non-profit & government support. Several facilities within the community are being considered to house the STEM Center however, a final site has not yet been selected. A spokesperson for the group said they hope to create a linear learning experience for younger students to act as a bridge to STEM education for the community’s existing middle and high schools.
